75 years ago, the United Nations was created - we are sure that you have heard this phrase more than once in a variety of contexts. Indeed, the UN is solving a lot of important tasks - first of all, the preservation of peace in the world, as well as the issues of equality of all people and fair access to the benefits of our planet.
And one of the most important UN projects is ecology and care for the health of our Earth. Five years ago, 193 UN member states signed a document that formulated 17 Sustainable Earth Development Goals (SDGs). What does sustainable development mean? This is a development that implies the economic well-being of all countries, human health and safety. And now the heads of state and society understand that such development cannot be achieved without active work to preserve the environment.
The 17 Goals include the objectives of conserving aquatic ecosystems, terrestrial ecosystems and combating climate change. In general, the problems of interacting with nature affect almost all 17 goals. The most valuable thing in them is the idea that all spheres of human life and our sustainable future depend on the preservation of the environment.
But what is written on paper is very difficult to implement, especially in such a complex system as our planet. In September 2019, the UN Summit on Sustainable Development was held in New York. The same one where Swedish eco-activist Greta Thunberg made her famous speech. At that time, the girl was 16 years old. Politicians and activists have wondered if there is progress towards the 17 goals.
And not only Greta, but also many UN representatives admitted that it is still far from the implementation of the planned steps. The SDG Summit prepared a new document, more decisive - “Preparedness for a decade of action and achievements for sustainable development”. The participants decided that it is necessary to move from plans to real actions.
The decade from 2020 to 2030 will be decisive for the quality of life of future generations. In other words, what the people of the whole Earth do or do not do in these short 10 years will decide the fate of the entire planet. 77 countries have pledged to make their economies green by 2050 and to minimize emissions of harmful carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In particular, 87 large private corporations (for example, Danone, IKEA, Nestle, Electrolux) have pledged to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to zero by 2050.
But as you perfectly understand, getting rid of environmental problems depends not only on the decisions that are made by whole countries and states, but also on the behavior and actions of each individual person. What can you do specifically?
Watch an interesting video that will tell you more about the 17 Goals and what you can do yourself. And also choose wonderful professions of the future in the "Ecology" section on our website - and go to study at them. And maybe it’s you who will become the superhero who will save the planet!
